I had a wonderful skate ski today on the Superior Municipal Forest yellow trail. I only saw one other set of tracks this afternoon. The skate deck and the classic tracks were in perfect shape! Everything was fast and firm. All of the SMF trails were freshly groomed for skate and classic skiing. I was surprised how fast the skate deck was, even with the extremely cold temperatures. It was windy, with a twenty five mile per hour sustained wind and a windchill of ten below zero, but once you got in the forest it was fine. I ski here five or six days a week and alternate skate and classic styles and every time I’ve gone out the grooming has been great. It’s so hard to beat these trails.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Everything is in excellent shape for the Municipal forest ski trails! Base is firm and holding up even with the few warm shots and weekend ski traffic. All trails have been groomed and fresh track set within the last 24 hours. Grooming plans: Sunday grooming will take place again this coming weekend.

What a treat we had today! I expected Superior to maybe groom the red and green with the new snow we got this morning and they did the entire system before noon. Wowza! My skins worked great, those with regular waxless clumped a bit and those who put the special formula on the scales worked well too.

About an inch and a half of snow fell this morning, which improved conditions considerably. All trails were groomed today. Where not re-set, the “old” classic track still works fine, and at 34 degrees this afternoon, glide was far better in the tracks than out.

Groomers have been out today and all of the trails have been groomed for skate skiing. Yellow and Purple both have fresh ski and track set.

Skied here hoping that the trails would be groomed, but sometimes that is a hard ask the morning after a few inches of snow. The groomer had done a pass on the skate deck, but the classic track was neglected. I cut my ski short because of the sloppy tracks. Hopefully they will give the classic skiers some love soon. The skate deck did appear to be thin in spots and had debris pulled up in places. It appeared soft, but that is expected after a snowfall.

We skied the purple trail today and despite the city having the day off, the grooming from yesterday allowed the trails to stay in tip top shape! Classic tracks were firm and 99% in tact, with solid pole plants. Skate deck was smooth and the hills were not even scary today! Well worth the trip from anywhere!

The base is a bit thin, the surface is getting dirty in places (especially near pines/spruce/cedars), the classic tracks are somewhat shallow, and no meaningful snow has fallen in over three weeks. In spite of this, classic and skate skiing is still pretty good. We can thank regular light-touch grooming (although none today) and temps not exceeding freezing since before Christmas. The “dirt” is usually organic material, although there are a few stray pebbles on some of the hills (easily avoided) and the occasional stone that’s been kicked up next to a disc-golf tee box. Be especially careful near the 4th hole tee between M and N. I’d stick to the B skis until more snow falls.

No breaking news here, SMF grooming was impeccable this morning. I skated all the trails and only the yellow (the best trail) was not groomed this morning but was still good with about 2" of lake effect fluff on a firm and fast skied-in base. Fast Wax Teal worked awesome. Everything else was freshly groomed today and near perfect. A few dirty, leafy areas but avoidable and no issues with good skis. I have said it many times over the years but we really appreciate all the hard work and care put into this trail system by the city groomers. Get your season pass and enjoy one of the most beautiful and the best groomed system in the Twin Ports!

Nordic Lovers dream... that's what I'm calling the Superior Municipal forest red and green trails today! There were two groomers out at the same time which created fresh cord for me multiple times on my short ski. Classic tracks were freshly reset today and debris free! This is one place that always satisfies!
