2019-2020 season

The dog and I skijored Nine Mile and Blue Ox after 3pm. The weather was sunny and 40 degrees F and the ski conditions were fun. Sunny sections were soft and sometimes sticky while areas in the shade were fast and icy. Overall the conditions were very good except for the road crossing to the Campground Loop. The road was pretty much mud and gravel so take off your skis and walk across. The classic tracks were overall very good except in turns where it was sunny most of the day. In those few areas the tracks were either worn away or soft enough for your skis to cut through the tracks.

When we arrived at Boulder temps were already in the 40's. The skate deck was well used and solid so we decided to just stick to Bear Paw. Classic tracks were in impeccable shape, deep and firm. The skate deck was very even but a mix of icy and ski stopping...Going across the lake had some drifting but was in good shape overall. The wax job for zero degrees from the Barkie Birkie probably made the "ski stopping" areas even more abrupt than they would have been with better wax and some rilling! The awesome grooming made for much better conditions than it could have been with the freeze thaw!

Classic was awesome - way nicer than I expected in the warm temps. Bear Paw was a bit icy. Blue Ox and Nine Pines just beautiful! I also spoke with a skater who said today's conditions were some of the best of the season - and what a fantastic season this has been! Looking forward to getting out there before it gets too warm.

Trails are in very good condition. Seems there has been some logging of areas near trail. This causes lots of open areas that hit you with heavy wind.

A couple of inches of new snow since the last grooming made the skating a bit of a slog, especially where there was drifting in the clear cuts. Classic tracks looked good throughout and were deep and firm when I hopped into them on downhills. Someone snowmobiled on Blue Ox but the damage doesn't go very far.

High teens and some sun, some clouds on Saturday morning at Boulder. About an inch or so of new snow slowed it down a little from earlier in the week, but still reasonably fast, and faster as it was skied in by some more skiers. Good classic tracks on the whole south loop system. A bit blown over on one or two of the exposed places, but only for a few tens of meters. Beautiful in the woods. The skaters I saw said it was nice.

Boulder was really busy today! The parking lot was almost full when we left, first time I've seen that many cars and I've been going for years! Lots of dogs, some skijoring, some loose. We stuck to Bear Paw and warming hut today, tracks were in great shape, solid and the skate deck had a lot of use, but was even and had loose snow on top. Thank you to the groomers for all their hard work!

Otter Run was groomed well with some needle and bark bits debris. This was an occasion when the failure on my part to recognize the difference between the air temperature and the snow temperature led me to overemphasize grip when waxing. The recycled old snow had cooled overnight with a near-zero low temperature and was nowhere near as warm as the air (mid 20s). Glide was poor without a wetter surface. Caveat waxer.

Quick skate lanes with some crumble throughout the skate system that skis easily glide over. Tracksets are about 1/2 the normal depth, but still good and not what I'd consider icy. Enjoy!
