Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

It's deteriorated a bit since yesterday. The snow is a little dirtier, a little mushier, and, oddly, slower. But there is still lots of snow and a decent classic track throughout. So you should go skiing. You'll feel better if you do.

Fun spring skiing. Classic track is still in surprisingly good shape. Muddy slushpuddles here and there. We used rock skis but could have used good skis. We skipped the J and L loops, so I can't tell you how those are holding up. Beautiful to be in the woods in the late afternoon sunshine.

Lester was much better than expected at 6:00 p.m. Sure, there were some icy brown spots in the usual places, but there is plenty of coverage throughout the trail system. Trail was soft enough that the ruts were not a problem. Still good skiing to be had out there. Feeling fortunate to have this type of "social distancing" at our doorstep.

I would avoid the J loop and do not go all the way down to the playground. The downhill segment is fine but the uphill segment contains a few ice patches that are impossible or near-impossible to ski over, yet difficult to ski around due to the steepness of the slope. D, F, and G loops are still skiable and except for one major ice patch in F, in pretty good shape. The short loop containing the downhill to the chalet is closed off.

Groomed yesterday, but it was very hard and fast. On the bright side, for this beginner-level skater, with all the glide I was able to focus more on technique while not working so hard. Major pools of ice to avoid, some wet, in various places. If you have the time, it's probably worth the drive to head to Boulder for a good long Saturday ski. Otherwise, enjoy a beautiful day at Lester, realizing conditions aren't perfect. Considering recent rain, however, there's a lot to be thankful for.

Fun slush skiing at about 34 degrees this afternoon/early evening. There is still a track throughout and lots of snow. The snow is dirty, so maybe don't use your best skis.

Snow was very soft, dirty and slow except on north facing hills but was skiable. The chalet loop is closed due to there being a section of bare ground at the bottom of the hill. I saw a gal classicing with skin skis and she appeared to be getting kick but the tracks are pretty shallow.

Trails are ripping good, went out 5ish tonight there were tons of folks out getting their ski on. The trail for skate was rock solid! The tracks looked a little glazed skinz for the win? Some of the best conditions as of late! Get on it before it warms up!

What a difference a day makes. The Piston Bully has already groomed the entire system. Thus the combination of 2 to 4 inches of new snow, a cold night, and grooming has brought the entire system back to mid winter perfection. There are no icy spots and intermediate skiers should happily do the entire system including the upper downhills. I used v40 and had a nice kick and glide. Enjoy before warm weather.

Ski Slog: Webster's dictionary defines this sport as a variation of cross-country skiing. One normally ski slogs after 2 to 4 inches of new, wet snow. Participants are known to lack the proper number of brain cells. Skiers hit the trails and quickly start using four letter words as the bottom of their skis ice up. Upon completing their ski and being asked by friends how the trail conditions were today, the answer goes something like this ... the woods were beautiful with the fresh snow. The evergreens were flocked with pristine whiteness. My kick was fantastic (notice that there is no mention of glide).
