Trail Reports

2020-2021 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 37    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Skated both loops at 10:00 AM to try to beat the melt and the wind. Skate deck was surprisingly soft, but good coverage at that time. Bridges and a few sun exposed spots will suffer with the sun and warm temps, but it was definitely worth it. Quite a few others thought the same and were out for the finale?

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Could glide entirety of both north and south loops at 6:30 this morning, though one has to avoid a few bare spots and there are some icy tracks lengths. Skate deck looked pretty decent with cold firm snow this morning. Thank you to the groomers -while it seemed too shallow in many areas to set classic tracks, their skate deck grooming also cleaned up the skier-carved classic tracks to make them more manageable than Sunday afternoon and Monday early morning. Nice to get likely a last ski in for the season, and we’ll be back once it snows again!

The groomer was out around 11am this morning. Skate ski deck was groomed when I left but the classic tracks had not been. Sunday and Monday's snow had covered up most of the bare ground which was exposed last Saturday. There were still a few places where the cement or grass were showing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
A rough day skiing is better than a day inside. Skied both the north and south loop, lots of softness and had to cut our own tracks on many parts of trail after the snow this morning. Several bare spots under trees, but still, navigable. Nevertheless, skiers starting after us seemed to find a bit more glide. A few skate skiers were out but skate deck is similarly custom made (cut your own).

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied the north loop and top half of south loop (out from clubhouse and back), classic tracks were OK, given the recent weather. About half of the trail had icy tracks, esp on downgrades. Some bare spots/near bare spots poking through esp under trees on the north loop and on the south loop at 2nd to last turn on way back to clubhouse. Tracks along north meadow were best conditions. Scattered debris (leaf/bark) here and there. Overall skiable, a testament to the groomers who’ve conditioned the track all year. Skate deck looked a little better, but icy crust in areas.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skated this morning while air was just getting above freezing. Skate deck is holding up well since Tuesday's grooming, even multiuse (photo). Nice smooth gliding. If you access from the Y there are some shallow truck tracks and deer remains to dodge. Saw a couple small bare spots in the tracks, mainly NE multiuse loop.

Considering how warm it is, the trails were good. Snow is granular and tracks are icey in most sections. A few places the tracks had melted through to the ground. But all in all it was a nice sunny warm ski!

So icy. I recommend B skis or even rock skis. Not much kick, if you have to choose between classic and skating I would choose skating. Skate deck looked decent for all the trails. I'm not sure how many days Chomonix will last with all this sun and warm weather... Hopefully temps can cool down and more snow is on its way, I'm not ready for skiing to be done for the year :(.

Skied all of south (orange) loop and part of connector to north loop and it was in good condition, holding up nicely with weather. Good double tracks in many areas and very little debris.

Appears to have been groomed today for classic and skate skiing. Snow is soft but weather was perfect!
