Skied classic today and I would not describe conditions as good. Most tracks on star were deteriorating and willow, frog and scenic were all ice coated so much to the point it felt dangerous going down hills and lots of people almost ran into each other, you basically had to double pole the whole time.

Fabulous early morning ski at Hyland’s pristine manmade snow trails. A moon set and sun rise. Rock hard track, klister skiing at its best. Skate deck looked fabulous. It’s worth getting there at 5:30 for sub freezing temperatures. Be careful on the downhill tracks, lightning fast.

Classic skied from Chalet to Frog Town loop. Good grooming but base icy and uphills required wishbone or jog step for ascent. Beautiful weather but more technical due to ice at 40F. Fun fact (family of beginners): we skied Birkie and NorthEnd in Cable WI two weeks ago around -20F to -40F, oddly it was easier since snow was “sticky”!

The snowmaking loop was in excellent condition. Generally firmly packed with just a little loose snow on top. The steeper uphills had deeper sugar on them. It was 39 degrees and sunny with a north wind. I used FastWax Yellow LF. I probably missed some of the better skiing with my 11:00 start but I still did not move too badly. I did end up herringboning about half of the more significant hills on the way out and on the portion of the return back up to the top of Scenic Foothills. However, the run from there to the Trailhead bldg. was fast for me - 8.3 mph - as I skated all the remaining uphills making up for the slower pace and higher effort on the way out. Stopped and got some glide wax cleaner and glider on the way home because I am looking forward to several more weeks of skiing I pray.

Skied the virtual Birkie today with a group of friends. Trail was great starting out even with the fresh dusting of snow. Some spots got sticky as it warmed up. Such a beautiful day! Couldn’t have been better.

Skated all of the snowmaking loop, plus the natural snow on Lake, Hill, Oak Knob, North, and Nature Center trails, late in the afternoon. All were in good to excellent condition for skating. The natural snow trails were a bit softer and slower than the manufactured snow trails, but still good, and coverage was complete. More bark and leaves on the Lake Trail than on the others, but it was mostly small stuff and not a problem. Classic tracks appeared to be good everywhere.
