Snowmaking loop was groomed this morning and was freaking amazing at 10:00 start with 55 degree temps but no sun until half the way back on the return. I figured it was going to be slog and prepared for turn around at Frog Town or top of Scenic. Instead I skated all the way to top of Scenic, walked for 10-15 seconds and then skated to Boulder Ridge bench. Skied the downhill with no problem with snowplow ridges. The initial climb up Scenic was softest with my skis starting to sink in about half way up where I quit and started walking before starting to skate again on intermediate flat to about half way up second climb. Still a great sustained schuss from top of Frog Town to the low point before the shack. Great ski for March 21. Thanks Hyland groomers.

Snowmaking loop was in phenomenal, fast condition at my 10:10 start. Despite Saturday's high temps there was little sugar accumulation - the 90 degree left hand turn on Frog Town and the top of the middle uphill leg of Star Loop was the worse. Skated right thru the former and the later broke my stride in what had been a continuous uphill skate all the way to the just before the top of the hill. My fastest skate of the year breaking my 8.0 mph goal on one of my last skis of the year. Once again there was no problematic snowplow wake on Boulder Ridge and Scenic Foothills downhills. Sustained nearly a continuous tuck from the top of Frog Town to just before the timing shack with just a few skating strides on the turn onto the start of Willow Creek. Hyland groomers have once again done a great job providing superb late season skiing.

Ideal conditions again, just slight debris in a few areas. Caught the temps just rising above 32. Lots of skate skiers. Good tracks. Thanks Hylands. Found this green ski binder in photo, contact if you want it back.

Last day? I hope not. Massive base still intact. Sunny and fast. Perfect day. Quite a few Birkie bibs, jeans and flannel shirts. A few short shorts.

Great, last (?) ski for this perfect spring day. Fast but not too icy. Went out early enough before it got too soft, 4 full laps done.
Appreciate the terrific grooming job!

Great spring skate ski conditions at Hyland this morning. 5K loop was firm and fast. Lots of die hard skiers out there but not busy. Looking good for Sunday morning too.

Snowmaking loop was in very good condition. North leg of Star was still closed for tree removal. Much of the trail's snow had "corned" since Wednesday morning. But it was not too deep on the uphills - I was able to skate nonstop to the bench on Boulder Ridge before slowing to a walk - and snow plow wake on Boulder Ridge and Scenic Foothills downhills still posed no problem at my 9:40 start. Surprisingly there was no sugar build-up on Boulder Ridge climb at all, probably because few tried it from the tracks I could see. More people were there than yesterday with about 20 cars in the parking lot. It was about 40 degrees and sunny. I used FastWax Yellow LF that was buffed with Fluoro paste the prior day - before my Wednesday ski.

The 5:01am report was good so I gave it a try at 7:01am and found it to excellent. Some dirt beginning to show through but still a 12" plus base.

At my 9:30 start, the snowmaking loop was in excellent condition. The northern leg of Star was still closed for tree removal. Trail had been groomed overnight so there was fresh corduroy that was nearly frozen in the shade and just a little bit soft in the sun. It was slower than yesterday. My pace was down about 10% due to both warmer conditions and my tired legs. But still no significant sugar on the uphills and only a little snowplow wake on the Boulder Ridge downhill. There were less than a dozen cars in the parking lot. It was 47 degrees according to my car thermometer and partly sunny with a moderate west wind. I used FastWax Yellow LF buffed with fluoro paste. Thanks to groomers for great job and to Three Rivers Parks for keeping this great venue open.

Skate deck for the snowmaking loop was in excellent condition at 9:00 am. Classic tracks also appeared to be in excellent condition on the snowmaking loop. Even though the temperature Tuesday night/Wednesday morning didn't get below 40F, radiative cooling caused the trail to freeze after grooming, so it was fast skating till it started to soften in places by 9:30 am. By 10:00 am the slopes that were facing the sun (southeast and south) had softened up a lot, and were slow and challenging. Flats and shaded areas and slopes facing away from the sun were still firm at 10:15 am. Grooming on the snowmaking loop was superb!!! Beautiful corduroy. Even the Boulder Ridge downhill was in good shape at least through 10:15 am...soft enough surface to control speed and maneuver, and no big piles of snow or ruts.
