Firsthand: Classic

Classic tracks on Fairway, Island, Timber, and Hill were quite good. Sometimes there seemed like there was a bit of the ice from previous days at the bottom of the tracks, but overall very good.

Island particularly on the north end was in poor condition. The rest of the interior trails - Hill, etc. - were in fair condition. Multiple bare spots on sun-exposed sections but you could ski around them. More challenging was the snow conditions that could be fast in the shade to agonizingly slow in the sun or when the dirt from the bare spots had spread onto the snow. Downhills were particularly treacherous as a consequence with a fast hill leading onto a slam-you-to-a-near-stop slow snow when you hit the bottom. Nearly pulled a hamstring the first time it happened to me on the last hill leading onto the "causeway" out to Island. Slowed myself on all descents after that to avoid that outcome. It was 45 degrees and sunny. I used FastWax Yellow LF buffed with fluoro paste which did not help unfortunately.

Followed the groomer around at 8:30 this morning. The trails were magical! Enough to snow to get edge and glide was great. Parts of the trail had branch debris, but easy enough to ski around. The grooming at Baker is always great. Trails are fairly quiet with the high school season over and many tapering for the upcoming Birkie. Get out to Baker and enjoy the beautiful trails and fantastic grooming.

Snow was boiler plate hard with very thin layer of loose snow on top. Lots of sticks and small debris littering the skate deck. Several spots were the ground was showing thru but you could ski around most of them. The upper sections of Fairway and Island near the visitor center were getting washboarded due to the blowing snow.

Didn't get to ski everything but conditions were worth making the trek out. A little harder than it has been but we'll worth getting out. Very few brown spots and no real bare spots. A few pine cones here and there.

Beautiful fresh corduroy. Baker is in great shape and I understand they groom everyday. I'm generally a classic skier and the tracks looked hard and deep. A little ice here and there. Baker is such a nice get away from Hyland and Wirth.

Overall, good conditions at Baker early afternoon. The only real icy stretches I found were on the connector trail to and from Island Trail. There were occasional dirty spots but really very little woods debris. Looked like it was groomed earlier as the corduroy was still evident. Baker groomers, nice work and thanks!

Great conditions today. The amazing groomers were able to grind up any crust that resulted from last week's warm temps into a nice consistent corduroy. Conditions are back to what we had prior to the warm-up. The only icy spots are heading out to the Island Trail and a small spot on the Timber Trail in front of the barn. Otherwise all the trails have a fast firm deck yet with enough corduroy for a good edge. Timber Trail was rated as poor but it was just as good as other trails rated as fair.

Arrived and talked to a very kind groomer right as I was about to ski. She said the best loop would be fairway to hill to prairie, so that's what I did (3x). Let me tell you, for what we've been given the trails we're great. I was the first tracks on the corduroy. A few washboard sections at the beginning and a showing of dirt here or there, but honestly better than it has been. A few crunchy spots here and there but overall a blast and my fresh blue wax was fast. Thank you groomers!

Fantastic skate conditions at 10:30am. Freshly groomed velvet, corduroy with few skiers in front of us. Even the Island loop was great. Four icy spots: short 100 yard connector to island loop, first steep uphill on island trail, after the steep down and up hill island, and downhill to Timber trail. Classic tracks looked firm and some ice. Classic skiers stay off island, dirt, ice, debris. If you are a klister skier, you'd love it.
