New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Classic skied 28 or 30 km early this afternoon. Conditions are groomed on part of Anchor, Abbey Road, and Buzz. Watch out if you're coming down Buzz with any speed because the tracks kind of switchback, aren't fluid, can be tough on the ankles. Deer Path, Northern Lights, Jerry's Long Loop, Skid Road, Sugar Bush and that cluster have fairly recent grooming with a dusting of snow. Overall, the tracks are mostly skied in on old grooming, softish with ok kick and good glide; skate deck is soft. Purple and red swix wax was smoking fast for these conditions when I skied. Can't wait to ski it fast when the conditions can handle the speed! Thanks volunteer groomers! Less than a month til the Birkie!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We have a good base 8"-12" groomed. Most of the trails are pretty firm with few softer areas. Friday morning grooming included skate and classic Trails: Abbey Road, Jolly Long, Telford. Thursday morning we did prepping for the Summit Race: Anchor, Anchor Switchback, Rollercoaster, Abbey Rd, Jolly (just straight to Skid Rd), Skid Rd, Northern Lights, Buzz. Wednesday morning we did all classic only trails.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I skated the Northern Lights loop in the evening, and the conditions are really great! The skate deck is firming up nicely after a week without a major snowfall. The tracks looked great! There are some places at the top of the ski hill and on the way down the buzz where the snow is drifting across the trail (we have had a lot of wind lately!), so keep an eye out. The drifts fill in pretty fast after the groomers go by. Everything except Jolly was freshly groomed, and all of the tracks were reset on the skate/classic and classic only trails. Thanks so much to our dedicated volunteer groomers!

Firsthand: Classic

Classic skied 24 km today. Northern Lights, Buzz, Sugarbush, Anchor, and Abbey Road. Conditions are fabulous! It's windy... but tracks are hard, grippy, glide is good with blue wax or colder; skate deck is firm and reliably groomed. Perfection for the weather! It set me up good for the 46 km Birkie Start to Hatchery Creek classic ski I'm doing tomorrow with Birchlegger Bill! Thank you! And thank you for the report yesterday! Right on.

Great conditions at Ashwabay for teaching classic skiing today. Freshly groomed tracks and skate deck on Abbey Road and Anchor. Firm, fast and still forgiving. Took my pregnant girlfriend out for her third time. 12 km skied and she can't wait to ski it again. Thanks for the touch up grooming last night! You rock groomers!

Classic skied 42 km today, 3:20, a little painful with the conditions. Wax was good, but the conditions are wind blown most everywhere. Unfortunately, heavy winds have all but erased the phenomenal conditions of the tracks and skate deck of yesterday. But, with that being said it was a good day to work on kick strength, ankle strength, and mental strength for a long ski, if that's your thing. Great day for a ski, scenery was second to none, a good amount of people were enjoying a warming ski on a cold and windy day!

Classic skied about 24 km this afternoon during the warmest part of the day. Conditions are phenomenal, in my opinion. The tracks and skate deck are firm. There's good glide, grip for kick and double poling is a possibility on a majority of what I skied. Can't wait to ski it again this weekend! Thank you groomers!
