Notes

Mcnaughton Lake Trail follows old logging roads around three lakes and has very few steep hills. It is very scenic and an excellent trail for a beginner. A five and a half mile loop is groomed for skating. There is a shelter with a fire ring on the trail.

I arrived early afternoon. The groomer arrived a short time after I did. I first skied the blue loop which had not been groomed yet. The track was extremely icy and I had to switch between the left and right track to make sure I had a free ski on the outside of corners to control speed. There was a ton of debris in the track. Conditions were poor at best. When I got to the trail hut, I could see the groomer had made its initial pass on the red skate loop. Returning to the parking lot, I could see the groomer had made a pass on the green loop. It was raked but not tracked. That first pass with the groomer dissipated the ice and forest debris and made conditions much better. Conditions were now good even without a track. This time when I got to the trail hut, I decided to classic ski the red loop even though there was no track. This is such a beautiful loop it was worth the effort even without a track. Since this is the skate loop, it is never tracked. I usually skate the red loop. When I returned to the trail hut the third time, I could see that the groomer had made another pass on the blue/green loop and now it was tracked. Conditions back to the parking lot were good to very good. Most of the forest debris had been churned under.

Excellent conditions. Groomer was out on trail when we started so for a while we skied on rolled but not tracked surface until groomer came around second time tracking trail. The conditions were great even on the freshly rolled surface but really nice after the groomer passed us when tracking the trail. The rest of the time on the freshly tracked trails was excellent. Some debris down especially in the area of heavy conifers but still great skiing. Thanks groomers!

Firsthand: Freestyle

This is one of the few trails that offer both classic and freestyle skiing. Last year, the groomer struggled to keep the skate loop groomed. Therefore, I was pleased to see it groomed this year. There was a bit of new snow on top of the skate deck which was just a bit icy underneath, so speed was a bit on the slow side. Overall conditions were good.

Arrived late morning. The groomer was just finishing. They did a terrific job. No debris issues. Snow clinging to the hemolocks was beautiful. One of those winter wonderland days. A fair number of skiers were there. Those using wax were having icing up issues as were some using no-wax. Some F4 on our no-wax gave us no problems.
